Before You Apply

The Variety Heart Scholarship is a grant specific for kids who are aiming high and are on a dedicated path towards excellence and potential elite-level achievement.

You may be eligible if:

Your child is aged 8-18 with an existing talent in sports, the arts or academics, and can support their claims with a professional reference.

Documents Required To Apply

Please reach out to us if we can help clarifying any of the below.

Professional recommendation

Endorsements or evaluations by a qualified person like a coach, teacher, mentor or specialist educator that demonstrate capability, growth and potential for the applicant.

A minimum of two of the following:

• Participation in extension, enrichment, sports scouts’ events, or specialist programs that develop advanced skills.

• Achievements or recognition in competitions, showcases, performances, exhibitions or representative events.

• Samples of work or performance evidence, such as projects, portfolios, recordings, routines, research papers or match footage.

Proof of household income

Recent documents
(within 3 months):

• 3 recent payslips, and/or
• A Centrelink statement

If self-employed: your latest tax return or Notice of Assessment.

How the Application Process Works

Our team reviews your application carefully and confidentially.
You will receive an outcome within six weeks, and you have 12 months to use the grant.

Application

Fill in the form, include documents, letters and quotes.

Assessment

• We will work with you to ensure the application has all the required infomation.

• Variety Grants Committee assesses the application and puts their recommendations to the Board.

• The Board makes the final decision, including determining funding levels.

• Assessment is based on merits, Variety's funding capacity, and the unique circumstances for each occasion, such as number of kids impacted, location, and access to local opportunities.

Outcome

• We aim to provide a decision within six weeks of receiving the application.

• You will receive an outcome letter via email.

• If approved, you will be sent an agreement to sign and return.

• Payment will be made directly to the supplier.

• The Board’s decision is final.

• An acquittal report must be submitted at the end of the funding period.

No. If approved, Variety pays the supplier directly.

Variety Heart Scholarship aims to support kids who are aiming high and are on a dedicated path toward excellence and potential elite-level achievement.

Applicants must be:

  • Between 8 and 18 years of age
  • Living in Tasmania - Australian citizenship is not a requirement
  • Household income must be under $165,000

and;

  • The child’s achievements and potential must be verified by a qualified professional
  • Evidence of achievement or potential must be included and must be relevant to the child’s discipline
  • Applicants must have a recognised talent in the areas of Arts, Sports or Academics

An application must meet the eligibility requirements.

We know that no two applications are the same, as such each application is assessed on its' own merits taking into consideration: 

  • Variety's funding capacity at the time of assessment
  • Number of dependents in the household
  • Geographic location – rural and remote areas
  • The availability of and access to local opportunities and services
  • Additional financial pressures (e.g. medical, disability-related, or caring responsibilities

Please do take the time to put together an application that: 

  • Clearly and concisely defines what the need is, and
  • Includes sufficient information and supporting documents such as quotes and support letters from an appropriate professional person that directly discusses and focuses on what the child’s or organisation's needs are.

Examples of ineligible requests: 

  • Retrospective funding.
  • School fees / Tutoring (School curriculum).
  • Parking, petrol and car costs.
  • Ongoing repairs/maintenance of equipment.
  • Travel costs that are associated with anyone other than the recipient.
